Energy-saving air conditioner set to cool the world’s hotspots

PEOPLE living in the Middle-East and other hotspots throughout the world might soon find life a bit more bearable, thanks to a new, low-energy air conditioning system devised by WA designer Graeme Attey.

Mr Attey last year won the emerging innovation category of the WA Innovator of the Year awards for developing the HIVAP (high velocity evaporation) system.

The system uses five per cent of the energy of refrigerated air conditioning systems and only a quarter of the energy required to operate a conventional evaporative system.

The fan-based system has many potential applications – including desalination and snow-making machines – and can even be powered by solar energy.

Since winning the award last year, Mr Attey has signed a global manufacturing and distribution licence with a Singaporean company, HIVAP Global Cooling.

“They basically have the rights to commercialise the technology,” Mr Attey says. […]
